Insurance companies that offer Medicare Part D plans are constantly trying to set themselves apart from the competition.

CIGNA’s approach looks like it will appeal to people who yearn for some extra benefits not included in original Medicare or a Medicare supplement policy.

If you are looking for a way to get some extra benefits but don’t want to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan you should consider enrolling in a CIGNA Medicare Rx plan.

CIGNA Medicare Part D plans include many similar benefits that are normally in Medicare Advantage plans such as; vision, hearing and chiropractic discounts available through their Healthy Rewards program.

Extra benefits make CIGNA Medicare Rx plans a good compliment to a Medigap policy or original Medicare

With the addition of the Healthy Rewards program, CIGNA Medicare Part D plans give people enrolled in original Medicare or Medigap some extras that they wouldn’t otherwise have.

Here is a sample of the extras:

• Discounts for vision exams and eye glasses at over 20,000 providers.
• Discounts on hearing aides and exams. A hearing aid purchase could save you hundreds, plus free batteries for 2 years and a 3 year warranty.
• Save up to 25% off chiropractic usual and customary charges.
• Additional benefits include discounts on weight loss, nutrition, gym memberships and smoking cessation programs.

One omission from the CIGNA Healthy Rewards program is dental. But when you consider that the program is not increasing the CIGNA Part D premium it’s understandable. In most cases a dental benefit with an Advantage plan is a small discount unless an extra premium is charged for a premium dental benefit.

The extra benefits are not the only reason to enroll in a CIGNA Part D plan

The extra benefits are a nice addition but you must remember why you are enrolling in a Part D plan to begin with. As with any Part D plan CIGNA Part D must list your medications in the plan’s formulary and be affordable.

If you find that your medications are included in the CIGNA Part D formulary and the premiums are in line, the addition of the Healthy Rewards program should be seen as an extra. All things being equal (or nearly equal) among competing plans the CIGNA Health Rewards program may be enough to win you over.

Next year’s Part D plans will be available for review October 1st. The Annual Election Period begins October 15th and ends December 7th each year. Compare plans early so as not to miss the enrollment deadline.
